It is rare for a visitor to Castlemaine to not consider a tree change to arguably Australia’s most culturally alive and diverse region. Castlemaine is a picturesque, relaxed rural setting. This 19th Century gold rush boom-town is now a major regional centre teeming with creativity and inspiration.
Local resident James Evans, understands the irresistible pull of Castlemaine for people who want to be a part of this culturally rich and enterprising region. James is the inspiration behind transforming the historical yet derelict landmark corner site, Comma Corner.
His vision for Comma Corner is for it to once again become an active icon landmark, contributing to the community and cultural enterprise of the town.
Originally this corner was the site of a “sly grog” tent in 1851, and proving to be a very worthy enterprise, the tent was replaced by a more substantial and respectable slab bark hut.
“Comma Corner was established by an entrepreneur with larger horizons, adding a hotel, separate shops and living accommodation,” says James. “Over the years, many people have re-configured the building with the ebbs and flows of economic activity.”
James has recreated the look of the original hotel in 1890s style; classic Victorian with high ceilings, substantial thick double-brick walls and solid timber floors, combining residential occupation with complimentary ground floor commercial amenities.
The building of five residential apartments at Comma Corner is taking place right now. The new apartment design preserves the classic features of the Victorian era—high ceilings, elegant two-metre tall sash windows and well-proportioned spaces. The refined historical narrative of the building is complemented by modern design, incorporating split mezzanine levels and high-quality European fittings.
Situated just a one-minute walk to all local shopping precincts, food hubs and entertainment venues, Comma Corner is at the centre of Castlemaine. It is an ideal location for people seeking to be close to Melbourne and wanting the convenience of having a direct train route to the city.
Many people see living in Castlemaine as having the best of both worlds,” explains James. “To be in a rural community and keep their connection to the city for the possibilities of work and social life down there.” James smiles, “…but the truth is, many people moving to Castlemaine rarely go to Melbourne as they find all they need is here.
